Distinguished and Famous people from Willoughby
📖 Kenneth Slessor
Poet and journalist Kenneth Slessor lived at several houses along the Pacific Highway in Chatswood during earlier and later periods of his life. His work included Five Bells, the elegy prompted by Joe Lynch's drowning in Sydney Harbour, as well as wartime reporting from overseas and New Guinea. Kenneth Slessor Park commemorates his local association. Behind the busy suburban road lies a connection with writing that could move from precise observation of ordinary life to an intensely musical meditation on memory and loss.
🏗️ Walter Burley Griffin
Walter Burley Griffin planned and developed Castlecrag from 1921, applying ideas about settlement, landscape and shared open space to the Middle Harbour setting. He and Marion Mahony Griffin lived locally while the project developed. Their earlier Canberra design had brought international attention, but Castlecrag placed architectural and planning ideas into an inhabited suburban landscape. A fountain by local sculptor Bim Hilder later commemorated his work. The association survives in roads, reserves and houses, making it possible to encounter the planning through an ordinary walk rather than only through drawings or photographs.
🎭 Marion Mahony Griffin
Marion Mahony Griffin was an architect in her own right as well as Walter Burley Griffin's collaborator. Her accomplished drawings contributed to their design work, including the successful Canberra proposal. At Castlecrag she participated in development and community life, with involvement in the Haven Scenic Theatre adding a cultural dimension to the architectural project. Born in Chicago in 1871, she later returned there after Walter's death. Willoughby's connection embraces both professional work and an imaginative community life in which buildings, landscape and outdoor performance could belong to the same vision.
📺 Brian Henderson
Brian Henderson's decades at Channel Nine connected Willoughby's television studios with news and entertainment across Sydney. Born in New Zealand, he joined the station in the 1950s and became both a familiar newsreader and the host of Bandstand. The two roles could seem worlds apart: the reassuring evening bulletin and a programme introducing popular performers to a television audience. Henderson Park, created during redevelopment of the former studio site, commemorates that working association. His local link is a sustained professional life at the studios, rather than a Willoughby birthplace.
